tyneside_cinema_1_470x353I don’t think I’m able to get to this but I suspect this event will be of interest to those of you based in Newcastle upon Tyne/the North East of England.

When: Tuesday 10th September, 6pm-8pm
Where: Tyneside Cinema, 10 Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 6QG Map

As part of the British Science Festival, this event explores the ethics of plastic surgery in the UK, with particular focus on the increasing trend for women to undergo labia surgery (labiaplasty) to neaten the appearance of their genitals.

Centrefold is an animated documentary film presenting the personal accounts of three women who have had a labiaplasty. A second film What the Experts Say provides commentary from a medical and psychological viewpoint.
Following the screening of both films, a panel discussion and audience debate will take place. The panel will include experts in the field, including Dr Lih Mei Liao and the director, Ellie Land.

The film upon its launch attracted international media attention and went viral within 24 hours. Subsequently the film is screening at festivals around the world and recently picked up an award from the Royal Television Society North East. Centrefold was made by North East film makers and this is the first time the film will screen publicly in Newcastle. For more information on Centrefold, visit http://www.thecentrefoldproject.org/
