London Dating App Research: Participants Needed

6ac385e0-18f4-11e4-84dd-5428a8b0ad5dVolunteers Sought for Research into Identity Formation and Protection in the use of Same-Sex Encounter/Dating Apps: Bloomsbury, London, 7pm 4 March 2015

Researchers from Northumbria University and Queen’s University of Belfast are looking for adult male volunteers to participate in focus groups as part of a research study examining users’ experiences of same-sex encounter/dating apps.

Many gay, bisexual and MSM make extensive use of same-sex encounter/dating apps. They can form an important part of their lives allowing them to connect with men for casual encounters, dating, friendship or networking. There are now a range of location-based mobile service apps available catering for different tastes including Grindr, Scruff and Gaydar.

This project funded by the British Irish Law Education and Technology Association explores the ways in which men are performing identity in the context of this technological landscape.

This project also seeks to understand the ways in which individuals endeavour (in so far as they do) to protect these online identities.

To volunteer to participate in a focus group you need to be male, over the age of 18 and have some experience of using same-sex encounter/dating apps.

This is the final focus group in a programme of group interviews across the UK.  The focus groups will be held at 7pm in Bloomsbury (just off Russell Square) on 4 March 2015. The focus groups will involve discussions around issues of identity formation and protection.

The focus group should last no more than 1hr 30mins. Participants will be given a £10 voucher as a thank you for giving up their time.

To enquire further about the study and/or the possibility of participating in the focus groups contact Kevin Brown at or Chris Ashford at
